Geology Field Methods

I teach Geology Field Methods I, II, and III at App State. Students have the opportunity to experience field-based learning at various levels and throughout their undergraduate education.

I believe that traditional field methods still play an important role in developing geoscientists. I mostly teach the “old way” of geologic mapping with a pencil, compass, and paper map that doesn’t change scale. The tactile nature of this mode of mapping is unrivaled in it’s ability to inspire student creativity and 3D thinking.

I feel that the technology of digital geologic mapping must be reserved for students who have already learned the traditional way. Of course, I do teach digital geologic mapping, but my focus is on the traditional methods currently.
